Essential Tremor
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is utilised in the treatment of Essential Tremor when symptoms are severe and disabling and satisfactory control is not achieved with medications. DBS can lead to improvements in tremor control of the order of 50-80% resulting in improved quality of life.
Parkinson’s disease
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is employed in the treatment of people living with Parkinson’s disease in whom optimal medical therapy is not providing satisfactory control of physical symptoms. In selected patients, DBS may improve and smooth control of physical symptoms reduces dyskinesia and improves quality of life.
Dystonia & Tourette syndrome
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is well established as an effective treatment in severe medication refractory dystonia from a variety of causes. There is substantive data to support efficacy of DBS in the management of severe and disabling Tourette’s syndrome where medical therapy is insufficiently effective.
